Overview

At CX Energy, we were proud to take on the significant challenge of transforming a bus garage in London into a modern, sustainable hub equipped with state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Our role involved managing a 5000 kVA independent connection provider (ICP) contestable connection and constructing a private electrical network (PEN) to cater to the new EV chargers.

Scope of work

We approached the project with a focus on precision, efficiency and sustainability, ensuring we delivered a robust solution that met all client specifications. To determine the feasibility of the connection, we carried out joint hole excavations at two off-site locations: River Road and St Paul’s Road. This included securing the necessary permits, such as Section 50 licences, and managing traffic for minimal disruption.

We designed the new network and installed 11 kV high-voltage (HV) cables, carrying out extensive off-site trenching to connect the points of connection to the new metered substations on-site.

Two new HV/11 kV metered substations were established, complete with GRP enclosures. Small power and lighting installations were completed within these substations, ensuring they were fully operational. On-site trenching was carried out to connect the boundary to the new substation positions, and we constructed concrete foundations for the HV substations and additional GRP enclosures to house meters and emergency power off systems.

During the final stages, we upgraded the transformer to 2500 kVA and expanded the concrete foundation to accommodate the larger equipment. The feeder pillar was also upgraded to 3600 A to future-proof the system, providing capacity for up to 23 breakers.

Challenges and solutions

One of the key challenges was managing the extensive off-site works, particularly in busy areas. By implementing efficient traffic management and liaising closely with local authorities, we minimised disruptions to the public and expedited the works. Additionally, the need for future-proofing required meticulous planning to ensure scalability without impacting the current operations.

Outcome

We successfully delivered the project on time and within budget, energising the EV chargers and handing over a fully functional, future-ready electrical network. The new infrastructure supports the transition to a greener public transport system, enabling sustainable fleet operations for years to come.
