Overview
We were contracted to design, construct and manage the implementation of a private electrical network (PEN) to support the new electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at Phase 4 of a bus garage in London. This project formed a critical part of the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future, aligning with the client’s commitment to net zero goals.
Scope of work
We were contracted to design, construct and manage the implementation of a private electrical network (PEN) to support the new electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at Phase 4 of a bus garage in London. This project formed a critical part of the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future, aligning with the client’s commitment to net zero goals.
A new 2000 A/1700 A low-voltage (LV) feeder pillar was installed, complete with a main incoming breaker, back-up generator connection and ten outgoing breakers to accommodate the EV chargers. Additional breaker capacity was offered as an optional upgrade. Single-core LV cables were trenched and installed from the new transformer to the feeder pillar, with terminations completed at both ends under strict safety protocols.
- Ten 150 kW DC stand-alone floor-mounted chargers were installed and supported by block- and lintel-raised foundations. This design enabled cable routing beneath the bases, ensuring a compact and efficient layout.
- CAT6 data cables were installed within flexible ducting and containment, linking the feeder pillar to each charger.
- Two 55-m-long Armco islands were constructed on either side of the chargers and feeder pillar, providing a secure and protected environment.
We oversaw the commissioning process before energising and handing over the completed system to the client.
Challenges and solutions
One of the project’s challenges involved optimising the trench and cable lengths because of site constraints. We proposed two potential feeder pillar locations to offer flexible solutions that minimised costs and disruption. Additionally, the raised foundations were designed to streamline cabling while maintaining site safety standards.
Outcome
The project was successfully delivered on time and to specification, enabling the seamless deployment of our client’s charging infrastructure. This installation supported the bus garage in its mission to decarbonisation operations, providing robust EV charging facilities for its fleet.
CX Energy’s expertise in renewable energy and private network construction was instrumental in the success of this project. By integrating engineering excellence with a focus on sustainability, we helped the client take a significant step toward a low-carbon future.
